Contrary to popular belief, hearing loss is not just common among ageing individuals. Hearing impairment doesn’t discriminate against age, gender, or class. And, a hearing aid is essential to manage hearing loss efficiently.

Thankfully, Hearing aid clinics provide you with a variety of options in these devices. Although hearing aids cannot restore the impairment, they can surely compensate for the loss to quite an extent.

If you are someone who is new to using hearing aids, you might initially feel uncomfortable using them. It takes a bit of time but you will get used to wearing them on a regular basis eventually. A new user of hearing aids needs to take extra precautions for maintaining their device.

Here are a few tips that will come in handy to a new hearing aid user

  • Be patient with yourself

The catch is to not compare your hearing aids to your glasses! Your glasses give you an immediate clearer vision when you put them on; it is not the case with hearing aids. It takes time to acclimate to the hearing aid.

Don’t expect your brain to remember your hearing patterns or interpret every sound instantly. Unlike glasses, hearing aids might take a few days or even weeks before you get comfortable wearing them.

  • Wear you hearing aid

A common mistake that new hearing aid users commit is to not wear their devices consistently. From the moment you get out of bed till you get back in, do not remove your device from your ear. Except for when you’re showering or swimming, have them in place.

If you’re not wearing your hearing aids consistently, you will not be able to stimulate your brain. This will lead to long-missed sounds. When in use, the hearing aids build muscles and auditory memory.

  • Don’t play with the volume button

A lot of you might find your new hearing aid a fascinating device. However, refrain from touching it again and again. Do not play with the volume button. Adjust the volume once, according to the environment you’re in. Do not interfere with the volume levels continuously.

This might lead to the hearing aid getting damaged. It can also harm your brain as it will not be able to adjust to frequent volume changes.

  • Read aloud to yourself

Your own voice might sound funny to you at first.  This issue will get resolved in a few days. Practice reading out aloud to yourself. By doing this, your own voice will reach your ears and you’ll get used to your volume & pitch quickly. Retrain yourself to speak at an appropriate volume.

  • Change the battery and clean your aids periodically

Regular usage might result in deposition of ear wax or debris on your device. Clean it on regular intervals with a soft clean cloth. Also remember to keep changing the batteries from time to time for your device to perform better.
